Brand Inspection Evaluation Committee Questionnaire

Please answer questions 1-19 in the space provided below and submit your answers. Your responses will be compiled along 
with those gathered from other S.D. ag organizations in an effort to evaluate and better the brand inspection program.

  1. Has the change in administering the brand inspection program had an impact on your livestock enterprise?  
    If so, how?  A. Obtaining inspection services on a timely basis B. Cost of services C. Availability of official forms 
    such as bills of sales and shippers permits D. Response to inquiries to the Brand Office 
  2. Have you had occasion to report strayed or stolen livestock?  If so, what did you experience with the Brand Board response?  
  3. Have you had livestock held for ownership verification?  
  4. Any problems with Market Clearances/cutbacks?  
  5. Any problems with brand registrations / transfers?  
  6. Is the current brand inspection area (West River only) sufficient to ensure theft prevention?  
  7. Are there other forms of livestock theft prevention, besides brand inspection, that could be efficiently utilized?  
  8. How often do you use the brand inspection program and in what capacity (producer, LMA, horse owner, dairy, etc)?  
  9. How much do you spend in the brand inspection program per year?  
  10. How much value do you estimate you receive from the brand inspection program annually?  
  11. Do believe it is OK to use brand inspection funds for purpose other than advancing the brand inspection system?  
    If so, what types of activities do you believe should be funded by the brand inspection funds?  
  12. If brand inspection weren't mandatory, would you voluntarily pay a brand inspection fee?  If so, what would 
    you be willing to pay (current fee is $.80 per head)?
      
  13. Is the brand inspection for horses an important tool for theft prevention?  If so, should the per head inspection fee be 
    higher than for cattle?  Would it be possible to do an annual or seasonal inspection for horses?  
  14. Do you currently brand all of your livestock?  
  15. What legislative changes, if any, would you suggest for improving the brand inspection program?  
  16. What do you believe is an appropriate penalty for violation of brand inspection laws?  
  17. Have you ever contacted a brand board member with a concern or suggestion regarding the brand inspection program?  
  18. Since the state has taken over brand inspection, and brand recording is statewide, should brand inspection be statewide?  
  19.
