This is the daily update for Monday September 13.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and provincial cattle associations continue to work with government to determine the details of the Federal Government strategy announced Friday to reposition the Canadian cattle industry. The Alberta Government announced an additional $230 million in new BSE funds. The Saskatchewan and Manitoba Governments indicated their intention to participate in the strategy but did not commit any additional funding.

The plan focuses on 4 main issues:

  • Continuing efforts to re-open the U.S. border to live cattle
  • Expansion of Canada’s packing sector
  • Sustaining the beef and cattle industry until planned increased slaughter capacity comes online, including an advance for cattle producers under the CAIS program and set aside programs for fed and feeder cattle
  • And increasing international market share

In other news, Japan has confirmed its 12th case of BSE, the third case diagnosed in that country this year. The latest case was a five-year-old dairy cow.
