Report from South Dakota CattleWomen
If you spend any time working the beef booths at
the stock shows or fairs or doing beef demos for the farm and home
shows, sooner or later someone comes along to let you know that you are
“preaching to the choir”. Yes,
I’ll admit as we talk to people passing through these show and
exhibitions, we find they are ranch families, homemakers and even high
school students. Most of
these people have an interest in agriculture or they wouldn’t be
there. So, they are the “choir”.
I also notice that they have an interest in the new heat and
serve products or a new recipe. They
want to learn more about beef. They
are the “choir” and who can sing the praises of beef better than
someone who knows about the product and has just had a sample of great
tasting beef.
I am really glad to see so many young people
interested in the heat and serve beef.
I know that many of them are helping with meal
preparation and even grocery shopping.
They are the consumers of the future.
I am glad to see them excited about the convenient great tasting
beef that is available. I
hope they make eating beef a habit for the rest of their lives.
While there are so many anti-meat messages out there for the
young men and women, the great taste of prime-rib or roast beef can be
pretty convincing. Finding
out that you can have this great taste in a few minutes can also help
sell them on beef. These
young men and women will go out and sing the praises of beef and recruit
some of their peers to the “choir”.
There is a lot of potential for ranch families to
promote their products, when they sample heat and serve beef and tell
their families and friends. I
know the non-ranch members of my family are always interested in new
products and preparation. We
can all find many ways to sing the praises of beef.
Many homemakers are always interested in ease of
food preparation and are concerned about healthy meals for their
families. We find that some
of the diets are now allowing a serving of lean beef.
They recognize that beef provides zinc, iron and protein while
being low in calories. This is one thing poultry can’t brag about. The
beef booths are a great way to educate consumers about how nutritious
beef really is!
I know how busy everyone is this time of the year,
but we can all do our part. We
can all be part of that “choir” and sing the praises of beef.
Next time you see a beef booth, stop by and visit.
You’ll walk away singing the praises of beef.
Sincerely,
Carol Simon
